The mechanism
Why altitude changes the cup
Geisha is not expensive because it is rare. It is expensive because of what the mountain does to it, and because almost nowhere can do it.
Cold nights, slow cherries
At this altitude the temperature falls hard after dark. The cherry effectively stops working at night and starts again at dawn, so ripening stretches across a far longer season than it would on low ground.
Slow ripening builds density
A cherry that takes longer lays down more sugar and grows a harder, denser bean. Density is the first thing a green buyer measures, because it is the physical record of a slow season. You cannot fake it with processing.
Density survives a light roast
A dense bean can be roasted light without tasting thin or sour, and jasmine and bergamot live in the light end of the roast curve. Take Geisha dark and you have paid a great deal of money for the taste of roast.
This is also why most Geisha sold online disappoints. The variety is only half the story. The altitude, the roast, and the time between the two are the other half.
The honest comparison
Why cheap Geisha is cheap
Geisha is the most imitated name in specialty coffee. Nothing below is a secret. It is simply what the price has to pay for.

The price
We are not the cheapest Geisha you can buy. We are trying to be the one where the bag and the cup describe the same coffee.
The range
Two processes, one farm
The same trees, picked the same week, taken down two different roads once the cherry comes off the branch. Start with the flight if you have never had Geisha.
See everything
Luna Nueva
$58Washed, 227 g
Jasmine, bergamot, white peach. The clean, crystalline side of Geisha, and the one to start with.

Luna Llena
$68Natural, 227 g
Dried whole in the cherry. Heavier, sweeter, closer to berry and stone fruit than to tea.

Fases
$42Tasting flight, 3 × 57 g
Both processes side by side, about six brews each. The least expensive way to find out what you like.
Cherry to kitchen
Four steps, one week
Most imported coffee is roasted after it has already crossed an ocean and sat in a warehouse. Ours goes the other way round.
Picked
Hand-picked cherry by cherry at full ripeness. Geisha ripens unevenly, so a plot is walked several times in a season.
Processed
Washed, or dried whole in the cherry, at the farm's own mill a few hundred metres from the trees it came off.
Roasted
Roasted at origin in small batches to a light profile, then rested and packed with a one-way valve and the roast date on the label.
Flown
Air-freighted to the United States and dispatched within 48 hours of roast. It costs more than sea freight. It is the whole point.

Reasonable questions
If something here does not answer it, write to us. A person reads every message. The full list is on the FAQ.
Why is this $58 when I can find Panama Geisha for $30?
Because at $30 the arithmetic does not work. A genuine Geisha lot costs more than that as unroasted green coffee, before anyone has roasted, packed, imported or shipped it. A bag at that price is usually a blend carrying the Geisha name, or a lot old enough to have lost the thing you were paying for.
Named Boquete estates from established importers sell in the $60 to $69 range for the same 227 g. We sit just under that because we buy from one farm directly.
How should I brew it?
Filter. A V60, Kalita, Chemex or any pour-over cone. Our starting recipe is 15 g of coffee to 250 g of water at 94 degrees Celsius, medium-fine grind, finished around 2:45.
How fresh will it be when it arrives?
Every bag carries its actual roast date, not a best-before. Roasted at origin and dispatched within 48 hours, so in normal conditions it reaches a US address within about a week of roasting.
It is at its best from roughly five days after roast through the following six weeks.
What if I do not like it?
Email us within 30 days of your first order and we refund it, however much of the bag is left. Keep the coffee.
We ask one thing in return, which is that you tell us what it actually tasted like.
Why are there no reviews on the site?
Because we have not been selling long enough to have real ones, and we would rather show you an empty page than invented ones. The reviews page says so at slightly greater length.
2026 harvest
One harvest a year. Then we wait.
Geisha comes off a single farm in a single season. When this lot runs out there is no reorder. The next one is twelve months behind it.
Shop the harvestDrink the first bag. If it is not what we said it was, we refund it.
First order, 30 days, however much of the bag is left. Email us and tell us what it actually tasted like. That is worth more to us than the order.
No return shipping. Keep the coffee.
